Course in occupational 4wd drive
Aims
To improve participant knowledge and skills in operating four wheel drive vehicles on unsealed surfaces and off road, lower risk, reduce vehicle running costs / damage and be more aware of environmental issues.
Outcomes
The course covers the following topics:
The risk associated with operating vehicles in remote areas
The additional risks associated with operating four wheel drives as compared to other vehicles type
Pre-drive vehicle check
Four wheel drive systems (part-time / full-time)
Free wheeling hubs
Transmission wind up
When four wheel drive should be employed
Tyres and inflation for off road driving
Emergency braking and vehicle control on unsealed roads
Basic principals of off road driving
Basic vehicle recovery
Develop an awareness of how attitude and risk taking behaviour effect driver safety and the safety of others
Understand the basic types of 4WD systems
Understand the advantages and disadvantages of 4WD vehicles
Demonstrate the ability to engage 4WD correctly
Understand the effect of speed on vehicle control and braking distances
Through practical driving manoeuvres develop skills and knowledge in operating four wheel drive vehicles on unsealed roads and off road situations
Understand safe recovery techniques

Note: Company requesting tripping has to provide two 4WD vehicles.
